What steps do I take to maximize the effect of chorination?
This will also increase the likelihood of a safe water sample.
Remove any water filters in your plumbing system.
Remove all screens from your faucets, if possible.
Run only the cold water in your water fixtures for 1 minute each. Flush toilets and fill your washing machine for 1 minute. We will run your outside spigots.
The chlorinated water needs to remain in the plumbing for a minimum of 8 hours. Please use the water sparingly during this time.
Run water from outside spigots for at least four hours or until chlorine smell is gone. DO NOT RUN WATER INTO SEPTIC TANK.
Run water in each faucet for 10 minutes.
Put water softener back in service (we have it bypassed).
Put screens back on your faucets and resume regular use.
What steps do I take to get the best water sample results?
Prepare to take water sample from hose spigot on your pressure tank(blue tank) in the morning Monday through Wednesday.
Heat the hose spigot briefly with a lighter or match.
Run 5 gallons of water through the spigot and discard.
Leave the plastic ring intact while removing the cap from the sample bottle. DO NOT TOUCH THE RIM OF THE SAMPLE BOTTLE.
Fill the bottle to the line and replace the cap on the bottle immediately.
Call the State Drinking Water lab 517.335.8184 for driving directions and to let them know when you are coming (due to high security).

Drive it to the lab promptly. If you can’t leave promptly keep the sample refrigerated.
